Objective: To determine the factors associated with retaining the vaccination card among care takers of 12-59 months old children in Karachi, Pakistan. Methods: This was an analytical cross-sectional study in Karachi. Households were randomly selected throughout a multistage cluster sampling technique. Data was collected for 504 children of 12- 59 months of age. Questionnaire was administered to caretakers to gather information regarding the children\u27s vaccination status, socio-demographic characteristics and reviewing their vaccination cards. Statistical analysis was done by SPSS 19 using logistic regression. Results: Among 462 vaccinated children, caretakers of 33% provided vaccination cards. Odds of card retention decrease if the caretaker has a large household i.e., \u3e5 people sharing one room (AOR 0.277, 95% CI: 0.096, 0.797) and if the child is of four to five years of age (AOR 0.544, 95% CI: 0.305, 0.970). Gender of the child, and the caretaker\u27s education and access to electronic media were not significant predictors of vaccination card retention in our study. Conclusion: Our study showed that vaccination card retention for children 12-59 months of age was low (33%) in Karachi. There is a need to educate caretakers of young children regarding the importance of keeping vaccination card and to disseminate this information through healthcare providers. Improving vaccination card retention is one of the key measures which will help towards accurately estimating coverage and to inform health policy decisions

Background: End stage renal disease is an important public health problem. Renal replacement therapy, dialysis and transplantation are used to provide relief from the symptoms of end stage renal disease whilst also preserving the life of the patients though they are not curative. Haemodialysis is the widely used method although it produces a negative impact on quality of life of the patients. Hypoalbumianemia has been reported to be frequently present in haemodialysis patients and correlates strongly with mortality and morbidity. Objective: To determine the frequency of deranged  inflammatory biomarkers in patients with end stage renal disease on hemodialysis, in Nishtar Hospital Multan. Material and methods: One hundred thirty-one cases with ESRD were selected from Hemodialysis Department, Nishtar Hospital Multan and  3ml of venous blood sample was taken before starting a session of hemodialysis and sent to central laboratory of Nishtar Hospital Multan. Serum Albumin was obtained by an automatic analyzer, and serum CRP by slide test, free of cost, to measure deranged inflammatory biomarkers. Data was analyzed by using SPSS version 20. Results: Of these 131 study cases, 85 (64.9%) were male patients while 46 (35.1%) were female patients. Mean age of our study cases was 42.37 ± 5.98 years. Of these 131 patients with ESRD on hemodialysis 33 (25.2%) were diabetic, 65 (49.6%) were hypertensives and 13 (9.9%) were obese. Mean duration on hemodialysis was 19.51 ± 7.59 months, 80 (61.1%) had to undergo hemodialysis twice a week and 51 (38.9%) had to undergo three times a week. Mean serum albumin level was noted to be 3.37 ± 0.59 g/dl. Mean serum C-reactive protein level was noted to be 20.73 ± 15.84 mg/l. Frequency of deranged inflammatory biomarkers in our study was noted to be in 109 (83.2%) of the study cases. Conclusion: Very high frequency of derangement in inflammatory biomarkers have been noted in our study. This derangement in these inflammatory biomarkers was significantly associated with female gender, increasing age, increased duration on hemodialysis and increased frequency of hemodialysis. The early diagnosis of these derangements followed by preventive measures can help decrease disease morbidity and mortality among targeted population. Get PDF
ABO blood group antigens have been identified as pathological agent in different disease conditions. For some time, the association of blood group with pregnancy associated conditions like pre-eclampsia is extensively under debate. Preeclampsia is a distressing condition of pregnancy which commonly causes maternal and fetal mortality around the globe. Multiple risk factors are found to be associated with preeclamptic occurrence. In this study our aim was to delineate a specific blood group which could be implicated as a risk factor for pre-eclampsia. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital of Karachi and retrieved obstetric data including blood group was from medical record files of 368 patients. Obtained data was analyzed by IBM SPSS version 21. Results: The prevalence of B group was recorded to be 41.3% as compared to O (26.1%), A (22.8%) and AB (9.8%). So, it can be concluded that women having blood group B are more prone to develop pre-eclampsia. Conclusion: Blood grouping of pregnant women in early weeks of pregnancy could assist in prediction or better management of pre-eclampsia

A Potential Bio-sorbent for Heavy Metals in the Remediation of Waste Water

Bay leaves are used for flavoring in cold drinks production, in bakery goods, sauces, confectionary products and liquors. The waste generated from these sources has been valorized by attempting the remediation of waste water. Hence, adsorption of toxic metals onto Bay leaves has been investigated after optimizing the experimental parameters, namely the pH, contact time, adsorbent and Zn(II) concentrations as well as the temperature of the equilibrium mixture (consisting of the metal solution in contact with the adsorbent). The participation of the constituent functional groups, of the adsorbent, was ascertained with Fourier transform spectroscopic studies. The mode of adsorption was examined by employing important isotherm models, namely Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich models. The adsorption process was found to follow pseudo-first order kinetic model and also followed the intraparticle diffusion up to 60 minutes of contact time. The thermodynamic parameters suggest the spontaneous nature of adsorption

Introduction: Nurse is the first member of the healthcare team to begin mobilizing the patient. There was little knowledge about nursing decisions on whether to ambulate, how they ambulate, and when they ambulate older hospitalized patients and also lack of knowledge and training. The most important change to improve time starts their first postoperative activity. Dangling the client the of surgery day to enhance the benefits of the early mobility and have to decreased the time from 16.8 to 6 hours with no side effects of client consequences. Methods: An experimental study which was conducted in a tertiary care hospital about improving nurses knowledge and attitude regarding early mobilization of post-operative patients in Lahore, Pakistan. This was a quality improvement project utilized a pre-survey, educational intervention, post survey design. The educational intervention integrated knowledge obtained from the review of literature in the form of a 25 minute Power Point presentation. Pre and post-survey included knowledge-based questions and opinion-based questions. Results: The data was collected from 109 participants from different surgical department’s nurses. It was consist into 2 section pre and post survey, eight multiple choice question knowledge based and five opinion-based statements answered by marking a visual analogue scale. The gander of the surgical nurses all were female and age group was up to 20 years, education of surgical nurses in general nursing was 50.5%, BS Nursing (Generic) was 4.6%, BS Nursing ( Post RN) was 26.6%, Specialization was 18.3%. Marital status of surgical nurses those who married was 54.1% and unmarried was 44.9%. Nursing experience of surgical Nurses was more than 6 months and Department of surgical Nurses in general surgery was 28.4%, ICU was 33.0%, urology was 16.5%, Gynae was 20.2% and neurosurgery was 5.5%. Conclusions: All nurses was correctly responded in both the pre-survey and post-survey to questions regarding the complications of immobility and the positive effect of early mobilization of the postoperative patient. An evaluation piece such as chart reviews at a future date was provided the opportunity to ensure change had embedded into practice, becoming the new status quo.  The Advanced Practice Nurse was the ability to devise, implement, and evaluate such initiatives with the purpose of achieving integration of evidence based knowledge into practice and improving patient outcomes.
